The Icefields Centre is a hotel at the heart of glacier country. It served as my base for a weekend of exploration in the Canadian Rockies. Through my room’s window I was greeted each day with a view of Mount Athabasca (3491m / 11454ft), Mount Andromeda (3450m / 11319ft), the Athabasca Glacier, Snow Dome (3456m / 11339ft) and the Dome Glacier.
The Centre does have tour buses that takes visitors on to the glacier. I instead preferred hiking through the talus field and along the lateral moraine to the toe of the glacier.
After a nice hike to the toe and along the lateral moraine you reach the top of the glacier where the glacier buses enter the glacier. You can notice the ice road on the left center of the above picture.
On the way back down, the setting sun gave a beautiful display on Athabasca and Andromeda.
